The number one reason of failure in online business not the lack tools, quitting too soon, not understanding digital marketing, not having have the right tools or not being smart enough.

People struggle when achieving success online because of a much simpler reason:

FEAR.

The most common form of fear is know as fear of failure. But there are other kinds of fear as harmful as this one and we will also cover them today:

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of rejection.
  • Fear of exposure.
  • Fear of judgement.
  • Fear of competition.

It’s a terrible enemy that must be faced before choosing any strategy, plan, making any idea become a business.

Just like we saw in the articles about self-confidence, purpose, and resilience — all these strengths only grow when you confront the force that tries to paralyze you every single day.

Different from the physical world, the digital environment is an open stage, where everything is public, analyzed, compared, and criticized.

And this usually triggers deep insecurities:

“What if I post and no one reacts?”
“What if I make a mistake and everyone sees?”
“What if my competitors are better?”
“What if I fail again?”

These thoughts create an illusion so powerful in your mind it feels real. But it’s not. It’s through fear your brain (mind) alerts and protects you from real danger, but it can paralyze you as well.

And guess what? Not everything is a real threat. Often times, it’s just a discomfort about trying something new and exploring something unknown.

The Fear of Failure — Your Mind’s Favorite Enemy

Fear of failure is the number one reason 95% of people QUIT before they even begin. Its manifested, for example, in the following kinds of thoughts:

“You’re not ready.”
“You’re going to mess up.”
“You’re an impostor.”

Overcoming this fear is simple once you understand any digital business success is a result of trial and error. Without action, there’s no result in the real world, and when you take action, you’re susceptible to making mistakes — obviously.

Even if you learn as much as you can, you’ll still make mistakes. It’s absolutely normal and part of the process. The result of trial and error is experience, change, and so, new results.

One of the most challenging things to learn for the first time is riding a bicycle, right? We fail miserable at first, but we don’t give up because we fall, and just abandon any form of two-wheel vehicle for the rest of our lives because of that.

We just know it’s part of the process. We fall, laugh, stand up and keep trying. It’s the very same thing in any other aspect of our lives, including online business.

Also, keep in mind that every successful online business owner failed hundreds of times. We just don’t see those parts (at least not until they revealed them to us).

Fear of Rejection — The Most Emotional of All

Fear of failure doesn’t come alone. It brings its friends with it, and this one hits the hardest.

Rejection affects your identity, your self-worth, and your sense of value. And when you’re online, everything feels amplified, because every metric feels like a judgment.

Views may become validation, likes may become approval, and comments may become acceptance. Just be careful because it’s some kind of emotional illusion.

It’s all feedback of what you need to improve. That’s all.

Fear of Exposure — The Most Invisible

This fear is sneaky. It doesn’t mean you have fear of failure in this one. Most of the time, you’re just shy, introvert or, in most cases, a reserved person (I’m counted in this one).

Whether you have some fear of being seen, discomfort of showing up, or hesitation to speak your truth, don’t worry. There are many ways of showing up, you just have to find yours.

Maybe just a photo in your profile, in your video’s intro, in you e-mail signature, etc. If you’re not the influencer type, you don’t need to show your personal life to everyone online.

But be aware of this:

In online business, those who show up prosper and make more money faster.

It’s simple. People connect with people. You don’t need to be the best speaker of all times, you just need to connect with others.

Fear of Competition — The Most Illusory

When I think about it, it’s a kind of fear of failure reflected in the following thoughts:

“But so many people talk about this…”
“Everyone already knows this content…”
“My niche is saturated…”

Let’s be honest here and check some facts. If there’s competition, it means there is demand.
And where there is demand, there is space.

Plus, even the most successful online business individuals can’t sell to hundreds of millions of people. It may be possible, but my point here is, you don’t need an astronomical number of people to make money or become a millionaire.

You just need a good balance between the amount of clients, the amount of products or services, and the value you charge for your products or services.

The differentiator here will never be the theme. It will be always you! You won’t please everyone, it’s needless and impossible. You just need to please and help your clients.

There are many different products and services online, but there are many people that will always prefer yours. Because of you, and you only! The love your way of explaining, your story, your energy, your perception, etc.

Mostly nowadays… please, pay attention to this: The market doesn’t need something new. It needs something authentic and honest.

How to Overcome Fear — The Practical Formula

Here’s what truly works:

1. Accept that fear is part of our journey in life.

Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s action in spite of it.

2. Turn fear into feedback.

Every risk analyzed is a strategy created. Every mistake is valuable information.

3. Small actions beat big paralysis.

Post something today. Send a message today. Start tiny — but start.

4. Always have and remember your purpose.

Purpose is the mental shield that keeps you on track. It shrinks the size of fear.

5. Resilience turns pain into strength.

When you walk through the storm, you don’t return the same — you return stronger.

6. Confidence is born from action.

The more you do, the more you trust yourself. Action creates courage, and courage destroys fear. Then, fear will step aside.
